Congratulations! The Cantate-Saal of the Fliegende Volksbühne Frankfurt receives the Hessian Historic Preservation Award 2020!
With the Cantate-Saal and its magnificent foyer, the City of Frankfurt has preserved an important piece of city history from the time “of nitribitt and kidney-shaped table”, emphasises the jury, which had to decide between 27 applications for the best examples of restoration in Hesse – no easy task, as it was said, given the quality of the applications.
The architect Michael Landes restored the Cantate-Saal for the Fliegende Volksbühne Frankfurt in a manner worthy of an award. With his restoration, Landes has succeeded in securing and making visible again numerous details from the decades of different uses – festival hall, folk theatre, cinema. This may have been more expensive, but it was worth it, as a visit shows. The carefully restored swinging seats alone – presumably from the time when the “Lupe 2” repertory cinema was housed here – create a very special atmosphere.
Most of the floors, railings and doors are still original from the time of construction, the colours have been reconstructed according to original findings. The modern lighting adapts itself unobtrusively.
