After more than 35 years, the Darmstadt synagogue and community centre underwent energy and design modernisation. The original special luminaires, which were developed by serien.lighting back in 1988, were retained, technically optimised and converted to modern LED technology. The concept was supplemented by luminaires from the current collection, such as SLICE² PI Ceiling, DRUM, LYD, SML and CAVITY.
The conversion of the striking chandelier in the prayer hall was carried out with particular sensitivity. As a central element, it retains its design language, but has now been freshly cleaned and is operated in three separately switchable LED light zones. The KORONA luminaires in the Breuer Hall were also modernised.
The renovation resulted in energy savings of up to 70% – the connected load was reduced from over 16 kW to less than 5 kW. The project thus combines an appreciation for historical heritage with a contemporary, efficient lighting solution.
About the synagogue in Darmstadt
The new synagogue on Wilhelm-Glässing-Straße was inaugurated in 1988 – exactly 50 years after the destruction of the three historic synagogues in Darmstadt. The building, including the adjacent community centre, was designed by architect Prof. Alfred Jacoby and completed in just 19 months. The twelve coloured glass windows and the doors of the Torah ark were created by British artist Brian Clarke and were made possible by donations from the citizens of Darmstadt.
